Trains are run by Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express. You get direct services north to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley, and south to Carlisle, Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston.

A typical run to Glasgow or Edinburgh takes around an hour. Carlisle is about 20 minutes. London is roughly four hours. Handy for a day out or heading further afield.

Save money with a Railcard

If you use the train a fair bit, a Railcard can knock a third off most fares. There’s one for 16-25 year olds, a 26-30 version, Senior Railcard for over-60s, Family & Friends, Two Together, and others for disabled travellers or veterans.

Here’s the useful bit most people miss: you can buy most of them cheaper using Tesco Clubcard vouchers. The vouchers are worth twice their face value when you spend them on a Railcard – so £17.50 in vouchers gets you a full year’s card. Check the Railcard website or Tesco Clubcard site for the latest.
